The Log Series by Alison Moritsugu

Mortsugu on her project:

In my log paintings, I examine the contrivances found in landscape paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries. These landscapes, by artists such as Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church, were deeply rooted in the political constructs of the time and depicted the land as a bountiful Eden, a limitless frontier ripe for conquest. I take these images out of their familiar context, the framed canvas, and paint directly on wood slices with bark intact. These landscapes appear as an homage to the idyllic art of the Hudson River School yet, by viewing the painting’s surface, the cross section of a tree, any sense of nostalgia or celebration of nature is countered by the evidence of its destruction.

Between Worlds” at Corey Helford Gallery.

Opening on December 12th, 2015 at Corey Helford Gallery’s brand new Downtown Los Angeles location is the group show “Between Worlds,” curated by Caro.

Between Worlds” explores the fantasy of planets and lands yet to be explored. The exhibition is a follow up to “Dreamlands”, where artists pushed the boundaries of the limitless landscape of our imaginations. When NASA retrieved photos from our solar system’s least understood planet, Pluto, earlier this year, a dreamland became reality. What those images lacked in finer details made up for in splendor, presenting a terrific look at the lonely planet of enormous mountains, deep valleys and a crystal blue sky. It was completely alien and strikingly familiar at the same time- not something you would have expected from the distant planet. “Between Worlds,” inspired by the spirit of NASA’s photographs, features 30 international contemporary artists who share an otherworldly quality in their art. In a variety of media and styles, their works romanticize both their hope and despair for the future, and express a deep desire to reconnect with our home planet, which is threatened by pollution.  Caro has a fantastic eye for artwork and the show has an awesome line up.  If you’re in Los Angeles at the time it’s certainly a show to see.

The Sigma 24-35mm f/2.0 - Photographing Kensington and Chelsea

2nd December 2015

I am seriously considering buying this lens for myself just for the sharpness! It is fantastically beautiful. However it is big and very heavy for something that is directly competing with prime lenses.

This added bulk certainly does mean that it is very conspicuous, but that is a sacrifice you have to accept to get the very fast f/2.0 aperture. This series of photographs shows of it’s capabilities as a great architectural lens. Each image was made by stitching three photographs together, vastly increasing the angle of view and superbly capturing every fine detail.
